RADIO FREQUENCY ABLATION (RFA)
What is this ?
Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) is the minimal invasive procedure of combining electrical energy and heat to perform a wide range of activities, right from reducing arthritis pain, correcting disturbances in heart rhythm, to destroying malignant or cancerous cells. Here, a thin needle is guided across the cancerous cells to generate high-frequency energy, which in turn generates heat, which destroys the malignant cells effectively.RFA comes in handy when surgery is not possible, like in those cases where considerable risks are involved and/ or where there are small tumors in internal organs.
Why I need this :
RFA is effectively used where there are chances of cancer in bone, esophagus (such as Barrett’s esophagus), kidney, liver, lungs or prostrate.
RFA is a blessing in geriatric medicine where chronic low back pain, neck pain and pain related to the joints due to bone degeneration as in arthritis, are persistent problems.
RFA can be also used to correct non-rhythmic heart beating pattern in patients.

What shall I expect :
It is advisable to refrain oneself from consuming food for 6 hours prior to the test; clear liquid, however, can be consumed before 2 hours.
If you have diabetes and you are dependent on insulin, you might have to adjust the insulin dosage one day prior to the test. The main side effect of RFA is swelling and bruising at the treated site, but which goes away after a few days.
The entire RFA process lasts for 30-90 minutes, and the patent returns home the same day.
