High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is an innovative non-invasive technology carried on under MRI guidance, for treating uterine fibroids in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal woman who do not want their uterus removed. It harnesses high-intensity ultrasound waves which are focused on a small area (between 4 square mm. to 16 square mm.) to produce intense heat energy. This result in the thermal destruction of the fibroid tissue, or tumor cells.
The MRI is used to zero-in the area of treatment and also to monitor the temperature so that the process can be carried out with accuracy and precision.
Fibroids or Leiomyomas are the most common benign tumor which thrives in the uterus. If left untreated, they can enlarge and cause various problems such as pain in the lower abdomen, heavy bleeding and pain during periods and intermenstrual spotting. Till the advent of HIFU, removal of symptomatic fibroids was the only option available to doctors.
Fibroids ranging from 3 cm to 15 cm can be easily treated, and also focal adenomyosis.
You will be needed to fast for about 4 hours to 6 hours before the procedure.
No incision and no external scar on abdominal skin; and neither any radiation is involved.
A catheter is placed in the bladder, and the patient has to lie on her stomach in the MRI scanner with her head out.
A control button is also given to the patient so that if she feels uncomfortable at any point, on pressing the button, the ultrasound beam is stopped immediately.
A well-trained doctor and many certified nurses will be attending you throughout the session so that constant verbal guidance and psychological support can be provided to you.
HIFU is extremely cost effective when compared to other procedures such as hysterectomy. We do not burden our beloved patients with additional hospital charges, nor will you undergo any post surgical problems.
